Memorial Day 2013: Tournament Preview

Memorial Day PhotoIn less than two weeks, Ultimate players from all corners of the Bay Area will descend on San Rafael’s McInnis Park to continue a 14-year-old Marin tradition. Memorial Day has developed a sterling reputation throughout the years of offering Ultimate players a unique experience while supporting worthy causes, making it one of the most popular tournaments in the Bay Area.

The local mixed tournament is well known for attracting diverse assortments of players and teams, ranging from established club teams to team conglomerations formed just for Memorial Day. It also has a history of raising money to support reputable causes and non-profit organizations, including the youth development organization DiversityWorks.

This year’s tournament will be no exception. It will feature a potluck, raffle and silent auction, as well as a mid-tournament gathering where all of the teams congregate to enjoy the raffle drawing and good-natured heckling — a unique community building experience that happens at no other tournament. In addition to the prizes for the winning team and individual spirit winners, there are also whispers of a super secret prize category that past winners are sworn to secrecy about. All tournament proceeds will benefit everyone’s favorite non-profit organization that works to grow Ultimate in the Bay Area — Bay Area Disc Association!

Ten teams will compete for the top prize, including last year’s champion Classy.

  • Boracho
  • Capitol Punishment
  • Classy
  • Feral Cows
  • Fluffy Bunny
  • I’m With Coco
  • Marin Castaways
  • She Did Not Say
  • Tanuki Love
  • The Kissing Part

Memorial Day also offers spectators opportunities to get involved through the potluck, raffle and silent auction, so family and friends are encouraged to attend!
