Although twinning was originally forged for military or political ties, this has grown considerably and today twinned cities focus on cultural exchanges, education, trade and commercial relations. Today, more than 2,000 cities, states and counties are partners in more than 140 countries around the world. Becoming a partner city is a contemporary process in which trust is established and a strong relationship is established with the desired partner city. These partnerships can be developed in different ways, such as: twinned cities can expect an influx of business, tourism and trade, as well as more investment in the local economy. Strengthening the international profile of cities is an excellent opportunity for each city to present its achievements to the local government.
